Regional Styles of Saree Draping

1. Nivi Drape (Andhra Pradesh & Telangana)

  • Tuck one end of the saree into the petticoat at the right waist and wrap it around once.
  • Make 5–7 pleats and tuck them in at the center front.
  • Drape the remaining fabric over the left shoulder, letting the pallu fall behind.
  • Adjust the pallu length and pleat it neatly if desired.

2. Bengali Drape (West Bengal)

  • Tuck the saree at the waist and wrap it around once.
  • Make wide pleats and tuck them in at the front.
  • Bring the pallu around the body under the right arm and drape it over the left shoulder.
  • Bring the pallu up under the right arm again and throw it over the right shoulder.

3. Gujarati Seedha Pallu (Gujarat)

  • Tuck the saree at the right waist and wrap it around.
  • Make pleats and tuck them in at the center front.
  • Bring the pallu from the back over the right shoulder.
  • Spread the pallu across the chest and pin it at the left waist.

4. Maharashtrian Nauvari (Maharashtra)

  • Use a nine-yard saree; start by tucking one end at the back waist.
  • Bring the saree between the legs and tuck it at the back, forming a dhoti.
  • Make pleats and tuck them at the front.
  • Drape the pallu over the left shoulder, securing it at the waist.

5. Kerala Mundum Neriyathum (Kerala)

  • Wrap the mundu (lower garment) around the waist and tuck it in.
  • Drape the neriyathum (upper garment) over the left shoulder.
  • Pin or pleat the neriyathum for a neat look.

6. Madisar (Tamil Nadu)

  • Use a nine-yard saree; start by tucking one end at the waist.
  • Bring the saree between the legs and tuck it at the back.
  • Make pleats and tuck them at the front.
  • Drape the pallu over the left shoulder and secure it at the waist.

7. Coorgi Style (Karnataka – Coorg Region)

  • Tuck the saree at the back and wrap it around the waist.
  • Make pleats and tuck them at the back.
  • Bring the pallu under the right arm and pin it over the left shoulder.

8. Assamese Mekhela Chador (Assam)

  • Wear the mekhela (skirt) and tuck it at the waist.
  • Drape the chador (upper cloth) around the body and over the left shoulder.
  • Pleat and pin the chador for a graceful finish.
